Warriappendi School workshop - 2005 November - Warriappendi SA

CHALLENG: The Hero Project worked with 10 young Indigenous students and their teachers at the Warriappendi School. In a series of workshops the participants built on the training already in place through their Nunga TV experience and further developed essential digital media skills, scripting, story-boarding, filming, recording sound.

OUTCOMES: The group decided to split into two teams, each developing separate film ideas. They decided to join forces and selected a very challenging subject: to produce a film about racism and media analysis wrapped in two competing Reality TV shows.The result was hysterical: the teams managed to weave their competing story-lines together into a hilarious comedy. Do you need keys in Grand Theft Auto? Who will be voted off the island? Some people are just too black …

SCREENINGS & AWARDS: The film screened at Come Out 2007 Youth Film Fest at the Mercury Cinema in Adelaide.

IMPACT & FEEDBACK: Surviva Nunga Style was selected for the award winning Directing the Hero Within resource DVD.
Nunga TV developed to a leading Indigenous community TV program.

SnapTV - CrocFest Port Augusta

Port Augusta Council youth workshop 3 - 2005 August - Port Augusta SA

CHALLENGE: The Hero Project worked with 16 young people and youth workers from Port Augusta. In a series of workshops the participants learnt essential digital media skills, scripting, story-boarding, filming, recording sound.

OUTCOMES: The team documented the best of CrocFest 2005 – and this meant preparing shot lists for key events, sending out teams to catch them as they happened, while others uploaded the footage and edited watchable clips! The film and its entire production process happened during the CrocFest on the local oval. Over the course of the event they planned, shot and edited just like a professional crew – and their final film was screened to huge applause on the last day of the festival.

CHALLENGE: The Hero Project worked with 3 communities and schools in Murrayville, Pinnaroo and Karoonda in a series of workshops to train the students in digital media skills to script, storyboard, film, record sound, and create edit-in-camera films.

OUTCOMES: The aim was to build on the ongoing outreach program and make digital media more accessible to regional and remote schools.The team made a series of fun and engaging short films, all made in under 3 hours!

Mallee Health youth workshop 2 - 2005 June - Pinnaroo SA

CHALLENGE: The Hero Project was invited to run a digital media workshop with Primary School students at the Mallee Health Service Inc in Pinnaroo, as part of a long term regional engagement project.

OUTCOMES: The youth worked with green screen and compositing software to realize their vision of a plastic cup 3-D animation. What started as a challenging project, as most of the participants where dropped off by their parents as a kind of Sunday day care, turned into a creative and unique project.

The somewhat involuntarily participating youth had difficulties to engage in the concepts of film making, as they wanted to create animations and were not interested in documentary making. And as some of them were hellbent on destroying all plastic cups within reach, we challenged the group to make a film about plastic cups – Cup Man was born! The team took off, produced a story within a short time, storyboarded it and created their own animation set, using the blue sky as a matte for their blue-screen color compositing. It was fabulous to see the group transform into a team within hours and make one of the most inventive Hero Project films to date.

CHALLENGE: 12 young people from Mt. Gambier and surrounding communities made a series of short films as part of our long term outreach program. The Hero Project ran ongoing workshops, networking with local schools and the community BushTV. Teamwork is essential to film-making and helped bridge the socio-economic boundaries of the group. Seeing mixed groups relate and share their stories is very encouraging in a world dominated by mistrust and prejudices.

OUTCOMES: The team produced many films, from ‘extreme sports’ to nature mocu-mentaries that resonate across youth cultures. They had the opportunity to work with renown documentary film-maker Peter Wintonick and sound designer Jason Sweeney during two master classes. The workshops received news coverage on regional commercial channel WIN TV and gave accolade to the participants and their families.

SCREENINGS & AWARDS: Track of Death, Skater Boy and Animal Interviews I & II formed part of the award winning Directing the Hero Within DVD resource.

Their films broadcast on BushTV, which can transmit to the 20.000 homes in the Mt Gambier district.

CHALLENGE: The Hero Project worked with participants from Port Augusta  youth club and an Indigenous youth team from the Port Augusta Secondary School. In a series of workshops the students learned essential digital media skills, scripting, story-boarding, filming, recording sound.
The aim was to build in the ongoing outreach program and make digital media more accessible to regional and remote schools.

OUTCOMES: Tanks: For most people the concrete tanks at the Lincoln Gap are just ugly ruins at the edge of the desert. But for some people it is a giant canvas, to reflect on – be it the teams they barrack for, Jesus or a place to proclaim eternal love…art, culture or… – decide for yourself.

The teams learned basic film making skills and were able to address issues ranging from mobile phone theft, graffiti and public art. Aimee Knight was accepted into the Flinders University Screen Studies with her films made during the 2005 Hero Project outreach program. In 2010 she is in her post graduate year and we expect to see amazing work from her in the coming years.

Everyone’s A Hero

Coober Pedy Area School workshop 2 - 2005 June - Coober Pedy SA

CHALLENGE: The Hero Project worked with 20 students and teachers from the Coober Pedy Area School. In a series of workshops the students learnt essential digital media skills, scripting, story-boarding, filming, recording sound.
The aim was to address issues around bullying in the classroom.

OUTCOMES: How do you speak back to a bully and reclaim the playground with your friends? Sometimes it takes the support of a magical friend to understand that everyone is a hero…
The film and production process were based on the student’s voice team, who had identified the need to talk about bullying. These primary school students wanted to screen their film to the whole school – which they did to huge applause.

Public art mobile video projection for tts australia 2005 May - Adelaide.

3 site specific interventionist, public video projections about the fear of terror. Created for the Adelaide leg of tts australia, a nationwide provocative performance by PVI collective.

Over 10 nights in May 2005 the work interacted with theatre performers, audience and the public art-guerilla-style, using mobile projectors at 3 different locations, intercepting the tts tour bus during it’s journey through Adelaide’s dark heart.

Mallee Health youth workshop 1 - 2005 April - Pinnaroo SA

CHALLENGE: The Hero Project continued its program in the Mallee with the second workshop in Pinnaroo. 3 local young people were involved in the production, with the support of the local youth and health workers.

OUTCOMES: Kade Richardson and Danah Ribbons discussed the impressions city folk have about them living in the country, and created a story about a local quirky character. Pinnaroo is over 300 km from the beach – but they do have their own surf beach and aren’t really worried about sharks…

The Big Find - Coober Pedy

Coober Pedy Area School workshop 1 - 2005 April - Coober Pedy SA

CHALLENGE: 6 young people from Coober Pedy made this film in the first 3-day workshop as part of the Hero Project outreach program. The Hero Project trained the participants in digital media skills to script, storyboard, film, record sound, and edit their films.

OUTCOMES: The team made an impressive short documentary about the impact of gambling on the local community. Their aim was to make a film about the pokies, to include different points of view from members of their community about this challenging issue.

SCREENINGS & AWARDS: The state-wide no-pokies-campaign used the film to raise awareness about pokies.

PROCESS: 15 young people from Port Augusta made this film as part of the ongoing Hero Project outreach program.
The Hero Project trained the participants in digital media skills to script, storyboard, film, record sound, and edit their films during a 3-day workshop.

OUTCOMES: Country is a way of life, mate – meet the original cowboys at a Country & Western talent quest…
Aimee and her team made a beautiful short documentary about the local music festival. Keepin’ It Country shows that there is a lot more to Country & Western than meets the ear… One of most valuable lessons was to always monitor your sound – a fabulous interview with an up-and-coming star got lost in the rumble of the passing road trains…

Come Out Youth Arts Festival workshop - 2005 February - Adelaide SA

CHALLENGE: The Hero Project ran their first fast and furious master-class with a large school group from Melbourne. 30 students and their teachers had to create 4 stories and shoot their edit-in-camera films in 3 hours.

OUTCOMES: Their challenge was to compare cities – what do you like and dislike about Adelaide – and then represent this in a short film. Have you ever seen the world from out of a garbage bin ? Or been airlifted back to outer space in the middle of a major city ?…

SCREENINGS & AWARDS: Their films have been screened hundreds of times across Australia to explain edit-in-camera techniques and key elements of creative storytelling (in under 3 hours!)
