CHALLENGE: The Hero Project team worked with 6 participants from its outreach program to document the 2006 Christmas Pageant. They engaged the whole community during the film making and learnt basic event documentation skills.

OUTCOMES: Their documentation follows the day of the Christmas Pageant and reveals this strange but alluring local custom: from early morning BBQ to the all revealing moments of Santa…

The participants recorded many interviews with participants, punters and VIP’s and managed to keep up with the caravan while filming.

The film screened as part of the Come Out 2007 Youth Film Fest at the Mercury Cinema in Adelaide.

IMPACT & FEEDBACK: Events SA used the film to promote the Adelaide Christmas Pageant.

This unusual project was a great opportunity for the Hero Project participants to hone their event documentation skills. Where else do you have a chance to run through a crowd of Christmas Pageant fans, with a lanyard around yoiur neck and all-access camera team behind you… Fabulous work, especially the daring interview of the man himself. I nearly fell of my sledge.

Making Links Conference - Sydney

The Hero Project was invited to present its empowerment methodology to national delegates from community arts and educational organizations.

We presented a hands-on workshop to over 30 delegates at the national Making Links Conference. The workshop covered the use of digital media in community and classroom environment, with a special focus on empowerment for disengaged and marginalized youth.

Murray Bridge Flood of '56

Murray Bridge Council youth workshop - 2006 October - Murray Bridge SA

CHALLENGE: The Hero Project team worked with 14 students at the Murray Bridge Council offices. The local council, through its youth service commissioned the team to document the commemoration of the 1956 Floods.

OUTCOMES: The youth team created an engaging documentary about the 1956 flood. But how do you do that without a budget and without boring your peers to tears? They imagined how it felt if the river flooded the town for over 12 months – and created an unusual eyewitness report with fun re-enactments …

SCREENINGS & AWARDS: The film screened at Come Out 2007 Youth Film Fest at the Mercury Cinema in Adelaide.

IMPACT & FEEDBACK: The participants interviewed a fabulous eye witness, who helped to bring the memories to life.

They accessed the most amazing locations – including a paddle steamer – and learned a lot about how to produce historical re-enactments. The editing process was very rewarding, as the team learned to source and integrate archival footage and also colour-grade their new footage to create beautiful transitions from old to present day.

Working Quorn

Quorn youth workshop 2 - 2006 October - Quorn SA

CHALLENGE: The Hero Project team worked with 16 students at the Quorn Area School, supported by the Southern Flinders Ranges Health Service, the Quorn Area School, the local council and the Quorn Caravan Park.

OUTCOMES: To create a series of short documentaries that address possible future careers in a remote town like Quorn. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? To whom could you speak to get advise?
The participants identified a fabulous set of characters, the most amazing locations and learned a lot about their local professions: from hairdressing, being a postie, to farming, camel riding and meat processing. The locals came up trumps, especially the Quorn butcher, who proved to be comedic talent, just stay away from his knives…

SCREENINGS & AWARDS:
The film screened at Come Out 2007 Youth Film Festival at the Mercury Cinema in Adelaide.

IMPACT & FEEDBACK: Their films screened as part of the Screen Australia outback touring program at the Quorn caravan park, to an audience of over 200.

Not many filmmakers have such a strong audience for their first film! The youth team from Quorn kept developing their skills which resulted in their team’s success at the inaugural Document Your World competition 2007.

CHALLENGE: The Hero Project team worked with 10 students at the Fremont Elizabeth High School during a 6-week workshop program.

OUTCOMES: The team managed to work within a noisy school environment, while creating a series of short films documenting their school activities and experiences.

The students grew into a fantastic team over the course of the project and learnt basic and intermediate digital video and production skills.

Directing the Hero Within

ATOM 2006 winner - Youth Media Training Resource 2006 July - Adelaide SA

Directing the Hero Within is a peer-training step by step film making resource for young people, available as interactive DVD and CDrom. The project was produced with hundreds of young people across South Australia in 2005-2006 during a series of youth video workshops, with support from the SA Film Corporation, Arts SA, Office for Youth and Country Arts SA.

The DVD features hands-on training videos, plus additional youth films, each paired with a specific behind-the-scenes mini-documentary. The CDrom has a 50-page teachers manual with lesson plans, student exercises and useful templates.

The resulting DVD kit won the national Australian Teachers of Media Awards in 2006 and was shortlisted as a finalist at the prestigious Australian Interactive Media Industry Awards 2007.

CHALLENGE: To run 3x 3-hour edit-in-camera workshops with students from the Parafield Gardens R-7 school.

OUTCOMES: The students made a series of funny films and acquired basic film narrative, camera and sound recording skills.

IMPACT & FEEDBACK: The school continued using digital media in the classroom, resulting in highly engaging films – they even sent us a DVD a few months later. Congratulations to a great program implementation!

Mallee Health youth workshop 3 - 2006 April - Pinnaroo SA

CHALLENGE: The Hero Project worked with 3 communities and schools in Murrayville, Pinnaroo and Karoonda in the second series of workshops to train the students in digital media skills to script, storyboard, film, record sound, and create edit-in-camera films.

OUTCOMES: The energetic and truly inter-generational team made a fun and engaging short film, shot and edited in one day! Using their quirky op-shop – a former bank with the old safe still intact – the young people created a fantastic little comedy. We especially enjoyed the tumbling tumble weed, which required a dedicated tumble weed wrangler…

Koonibba Vandalism

Koonibba Aboriginal Community youth workshop - 2006 April - Koonibba SA

Advice: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are advised that this website and video links may contain images and voices of people who have died.

CHALLENGE: The Koonibba Aboriginal Community Council commissioned this workshop as a cultural activity for their young people.
The youth team wanted to address the recent vandalism within their community.

OUTCOMES: The project was an outstanding success, with 25 young people involved for 5 days. The group documented the vandalism in their community and juxtaposed this with all the activities available to them at the youth centre. The young vandals turned up during filming and were keen to get involved and then unannounced cleaned up the damage. On the last day the whole community celebrated their film with a shared lunch screening.

MPACT & FEEDBACK: Over the last years, the surrounding remote communities watched the DVD and were very impressed with the outcome. Three years later, during our most recent visit to the Nullabor community of Yalata, most of the participants still remembered seeing the film made by the Koonibba youth in 2006.

Quorn youth workshop 1 - 2006 March - Quorn SA

CHALLENGE: The Hero Project team worked with 14 students at the Quorn Area School, supported by the Southern Flinders Ranges Health Service and the Quorn caravan park. They engaged the whole community during the film making and learnt basic digital video and production skills.

OUTCOMES: Their story tells the quirkiness of their beautiful country town: Legend has it that the mythical township of Qourn (on the edge of the great South Australian desert) can only be reached by camel.

The participants created a fabulous script and set of characters, (real and imagined) and scouted the most stunning locations.

s.cam – consuming the gaze is an interactive new media performance for the Adelaide CBD, which explores notions of the ‘see-thru’ citizen, body/gender politics and surveillance.

Initially created as 2 roving cyborgs developed between Jan and July 2006, s.cam became part of the development of the Love Referendum ARG and performance.

s.cam was commissioned by the Adelaide City Council Public Art Program
